Sargood Golden Oldies Camp

“It was a huge eye opener that paraplegic people can be regarded as any other member of society and considered a potential asset and not just a nuisance to be tolerated.” Golden Oldie (Anon.), June 2024

In June 2024, the Foundation was able to fund our first Golden Oldies Camp at Sargood with 10 people who were aged over 65 – accompanied by their partners or family members staying with us for 3 nights.

Both research and people living with SCI have found that having a network of friends or people with shared interests is important for healthy aging. It may also improve the quality of life and help maintain independence. Social networks can help have a positive outlook.

For people with an SCI, successful aging involves taking care of physical, emotional, and social health; maintaining as much independence as possible; and being open to changing how to do things when old strategies don’t work.

“I found the whole stay at Sargood to be informative, enjoyable, and educational in speaking with others who also have spinal cord injuries. The Sargood team were outstanding.” Christine, June 2024.

The weather was beautiful for the first 2 days – our guests enjoyed some new and well organised activities – one lady saw her toes for the first time in years at yoga!

On the first day, we had Sir Peter Cosgrove join our Oldies for their paint and sip session – this was such a delight our guests. He stayed so long, chatting with each and every person there.

On the second day, after activities in the morning we enjoyed a long lunch at LRGC where there was such a great atmosphere.

The last day was about joining with the Sargood team and trying out some activities such as beach wheeling, kayaking and trying out adaptive equipment.

“Ted and I enjoyed every minute of our stay. The girls who showered and dressed me, the delicious food, the friendly atmosphere and the fantastic empathy that all staff showed to us. It made my health issues, of which I have many, fade into the background. The ex-curricular activities were well run and well prepared. The visit of Sir Peter Cosgrove & Rod Macqueen and their wives and the profound talk Sir Peter gave , just topped off a perfect weekend.” Lynne, June 2024
